This is my example of the Japanese Army Type 97 Altimeter produced by Tanaka Keiki Seisakusho. This altimeter type was used in a variety of IJAAF aircraft including the famous Ki-43 Hayabusa 隼 (Peregrine Falcon) “Oscar”, Nakajima Ki-44 Zhong Kui 鍾馗 (King of Ghosts) “Tojo” and the Kawasaki Ki-100 Goshikisen 五式戦闘機 (Type 5 Fighter). Overall this is a pretty clean example other than one very noticeable default; that being the large hand not being present. This gauge normally had two hands, the large hand would read 1,000m (3,281ft) with one revolution and 10,000m (32,810ft) with one revolution of the small hand. I am hoping in due time I will possibly come across a spare large hand, although I know this is highly unlikely, and purchased the gauge anyway as they are becoming harder and harder to find like most WWII Japanese instrumentation. Other than this it has a small buckle or dent in the outer ring, and two very small (hardly visible) chips right up high on the edge of the glass. Other than that, I am happy with this gauge and it will eventually become permanently housed in my replica Ki-43 “Oscar” instrument panel.
