This is my example of the Japanese Type 2 “Gou” Vertical Navigator’s Compass produced by Tokyo Koku Keiki. This compass type although mostly used in the navigator’s position in twin-engine IJAAF bombers such as the Ki-48 Shiki-Souhatu-Keibaku 九九式雙發輕爆擊機 (Sokei) “Lily” it was also known to sometimes be floor mounted to the front of the pilot’s control stick in such fighters as the famous Ki-43 Hayabusa 隼 (Peregrine Falcon) “Oscar”. This a very nice example obtained through a good friend of mine down south that was looking to move it into a new home. Now, I am not totally sure if these were filled with an alcohol solution or an oil out of the factory, however this one seems to be filled with a very fine oil. Unfortunately during postage some sloshing occurred and now some of the oil is on the inside face of the second glass. It will be left like this on the off chance it could get damaged trying to get it open. These were a very similar design to the Air Ministry P4 compass used by the RAF, it too used the floating spring system as seen here in this example.
