This is my example of the Japanese Navy Radio Compass produced by Yokogawa Denki Seisakusho. This was not the most common Japanese aircraft gauge and was far from used in all aircraft. This gauge operated off signal strength obtained from the loop antenna. The center needle gave direction left or right to the transmitting station. The left needle indicated intensity of the signal so as to determine if going to or from the station. This particular gauge just happened to be used in my Mitsubishi G4M Hamaki 葉巻 (Cigar/Leaf Roll) “Betty” panel configuration. Not all Betty’s had the hole for this gauge to be installed, so when I saw this one come up for sale I knew I had to obtain it. It was full of sand and partial salt build up, so I suspect it spent some time near a beach in the tropics. It cleaned up rather nice and will eventually be displayed in my original G4M1 Betty instrument panel.
